A painter, gouache painter, and draftsman. A polymorphous abstract artist. He was also a military aviator, parachute acrobat. He also worked in theater. In 1942, he was part of a symphony orchestra. He worked as a bar pianist, night watchman, and radio presenter in Montpellier, where he lived. In the thirties, he met Henri Closon, one of the very first French abstract painters, who introduced him to painting. Since 1937, he participated in the rare abstract art exhibitions organized in France. He did not dedicate himself entirely to painting until after 1942. In 1949, with Francis Bott and Michel Seuphor (a major figure in abstract art), he organized an abstract art exhibition at the Museum of Nîmes. From 1950, he participated in the Paris Realities Salon (Salon des Réalités Nouvelles). In 1950, the Montpellier Museum dedicated a personal retrospective exhibition to him. Until a new solo exhibition in Paris in 1993, at the Sculptures gallery, he did not publicly appear again, while continuing to work. Throughout his career, his abstract compositions take on several manifestations. Initially, sometimes an uninterrupted arabesque left its intertwined trace on the surface of the canvas, like nostalgia for the old evolutions in the sky. Later he mainly used gouache for material effects, less “airy” and beyond gestural, aiming more at dreamy contemplation. In the 1970s, he abandoned gouache to turn toward drawing and collage. His pen drawings, of perfect rigor, recall the poetic graphics of his friend Michel Seuphor.
