JEAN-FRANÇOIS-THÉRÈSE CHALGRIN (FRENCH 1739-1811) BALLROOM FOR THE DAUPHIN'S WEDDING TO MARIE ANTOINETTE, 1770 Watercolour, pen and black ink, pencil and grey wash, heightened with white on laid paper 49.5 x 66.5cm (19¼ x 26in.) Provenance: The collection of Victorien Sardou His sale, Galerie Georges Petit, 27-28 April 1909, lot 49 Sale, Me Ader, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 14 December 1962, lot 23 (where misattributed to François-Joseph Bélanger according to label verso) The collection of Olivier Lefuel, Paris His sale, Millon & Millon & Associés, Paris, Collection d'un Grand Amateur de Dessins d'Architecture, 26 June 2008, lot 101 Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI were the last reigning monarchs in France. They married on 16 May 1770 in Versailles in front of over 5000 guests. In addition, a crowd of over 200,000 onlookers watched the final celebratory firework display at the end of the evening. The marriage itself had been many years in the making with King Louis XV and Empress Marie Theresa orchestrating the union when Louis and Marie were still children. The motive behind the match was to end a three-century rivalry between their respective countries France and Austria. Perhaps foreshadowing events to come, the marriage was viewed as bad luck when a big storm the morning of the wedding threatened to interrupt the ceremony, and later that evening after the firework display ended, a huge riot resulted in the deaths of several hundred civilians.
