Javier Mariscal – Cobi Barcelona 1992 – Signed Metal Sculpture & Paperweight – CAM DESCRIPTION JAVIER MARISCAL – COBI – BARCELONA 1992 Original signed sculpture/paperweight depicting Cobi, the iconic cubist-style dog designed by Spanish artist and designer Javier Mariscal as the official mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. This substantial metal sculpture is both a decorative object and functional paperweight/container, with the characteristic angular, elongated form of Mariscal’s Cobi design. The piece is signed “Javier Mariscal” directly into the metal on the rear of the figure. It also bears the CAM (Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo) association/publisher marking, as documented for this model. The piece is particularly impressive in the hand: it measures approximately 27 cm in length and weighs approximately 1.68 kg. ABOUT COBI Cobi was designed by Javier Mariscal for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and became one of the most recognisable Olympic mascots of the modern era. Mariscal’s distinctive cubist-inspired interpretation deliberately departed from the more conventional cartoon mascots used at previous Olympic Games. This signed metal example is considerably more substantial than the many small commercial Cobi souvenirs produced around the Barcelona Olympics.
