JAPAN. New Oriental Bank Corporation Limited. 1 Dollar, 1.1.1886.

One of the Two Finest Known New Oriental Bank $1 JAPAN. New Oriental Bank Corporation Limited. 1 Dollar, 1.1.1886. P-S260a. Low Serial Number. PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Rare and important private bank issue from Japan. This bank was the reorganization of what had started in 1842 as the Bank of Western India, which in 1851 became the Oriental Bank Corporation. The bank soon expanded throughout the region, including in Japan, as well as further abroad in Australia, South Africa and San Francisco. Its success, however, did not continue, and after a number of loans that went bad the bank suspended payments in 1884 and was soon thereafter liquidated. It then became the New Oriental Bank Corporation Limited, which never enjoyed the success of the former institution, and the bank was finally liquidated in 1892. Notes from this institution, such as the one seen here, are seldom seen and are rare. This is a pleasing problem-free circulated example with strong pen signatures. This is tied for finest in the PMG population report with just one other example, and is by far the nicest example of this issue we have ever offered. It also features a low 2-digit serial number. Estimate: $6,000 - $9,000.
