Jan Simon Knikker (1911-1990) - Stadsgezicht Amsterdam...

A beautiful cityscape of Amsterdam with the Bloemenmarkt and the Munttoren. The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the world’s only floating flower market, located on the Singel between Koningsplein and Muntplein. This iconic market, existing since 1862, offers a lively experience with a wide range of flowers and plants displayed on boats. The canvas measures 60x80 cm and the outer frame size is 85x105 cm. The painting is signed on the bottom left. The painting is in excellent restored condition (dimmed) and free of surface dirt. Recently a protective varnish has been applied, which preserves the painting well for the future. The Flemish ornament frame is also in excellent condition and shows hardly any signs of use. This frame is from the top brand KWH. Jan Simon Knikker junior was born on 2 August 1911 in Leiden and died on 16 July 1990 in The Hague. He was the son of the well-known Dutch painter Jan Simon Knikker senior (1889-1957). His uncle was the renowned painter Aris Knikker (1887-1962). Knikker junior studied from 1928 to 1932 at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and was a follower of the Hague School. He worked in Wassenaar, Voorschoten (1937) and The Hague (1938-1969). Knikker junior mainly painted: landscapes, river scenes, winter scenes, cityscapes, village scenes and still lifes of flowers.
