Published in 1816, this work constitutes an important testimony to the evolution of experimental and mathematical physics at the beginning of the 19th century. Biot was notably one of the great French savants of his era, renowned for his work on optics, polarization of light, magnetism and the physical properties of matter. These illustrations constitute a remarkable testimony to scientific instrumentation at the beginning of the 19th century. Condition: Good overall condition for a set over two centuries old. Period bindings showing rubbing and signs of use, notably on the spines, headbands and corners. Interior generally well preserved, with some foxing, browning and small signs of time. Large engraved plates and folding tables present, with old creases. The two volumes are complete individually. They are volumes I and II of a work originally published in four volumes. Bibliophilic interest: Original edition of a major French physics treatise from the early 19th century.
