Italy - Veneto // Val Brenta // Brenta Canal; Gabriel...

Fascinating and detailed perspective view of the Brenta River gorge showing the spectacular rock fortress of Covolo di Butistone (Kofel). The print perfectly captures the military engineering of the era: at the center of the rocky wall is visible the iconic winch system (pulley) suspended in the void, used as the sole means to lift goods, ammunition, and garrisons inside the upper castle. In the foreground and along the ridges the patrol walkways, the lower fortifications blocking the postal route, and the course of the river are outlined. On the left side there is an alphabetic legend in German (A-L) printed directly on the slab, essential for identifying the strategic points of the area, including the Brenta river course (C. Brenta Fluß), the town of Cismon (D. Cismon), and the settlement of Primolano (E. Primolano). At the top right the identifying title of the gorge stands out: „Stoel“ (ancient toponym indicating the narrow of the gorge or the covolo). The impression of the slab is well defined, with a sharp inking that preserves the details of the hatchings and of the legend. It shows light and physiological signs of time (slight foxing and yellowing of the paper at the outer margins) that do not affect the quality of the engraved part.
