Italy - Italy / Sicily

The map represents the Italian peninsula, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and the neighboring Balkan and North African coasts. The geography reflects the “pure” scientific style introduced by Sanson, who abandoned the fanciful sixteenth-century decorations (sea monsters, galleons) to favor geometric and hydrographic precision. Political Subdivision: The chart shows seventeenth-century fragmentary Italy, precisely delimiting the borders of the Kingdom of Naples, the Papal States, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Republic of Venice, the Padanian duchies, and the dominions of Savoy and Spain. Orography and Hydrography: The mountain ranges of the Apennines and the Alps are depicted with the characteristic pictorial relief method “a monticelli.” Notable is the density of the hydrographic network and the toponyms in Italian and French. Decorative Elements: In the upper right corner stands a monumental Baroque cartouche, finely engraved, decorated with drapery, heraldic shields and floral motifs, topped by an eagle with outstretched wings. In the lower right is the graphical scale expressed in various era units (Miles of Italy, French Leagues, etc.). Excellent overall freshness of the ink. The coloration of the borders is vivid and well preserved, with light and physiological oxidations of the green pigments (typical of copper-based components of the era) that do not compromise the stability of the paper. Restoration Interventions / Minor Restorations: There is the classic conservative consolidation on the verso corresponding to the central editorial fold, carried out with suitable Japanese paper and reversible starch paste to prevent or repair a small crack from wear due to folding. Presence of very slight and pinpoint restorative touches on minimal woodworm holes or small marginal tears outside the incised area, perfectly executed in accordance with the professional standard and invisible on the recto (front).
