Das grossformatige Gemälde zeigt den Heiligen Benedikt von Nursia in tiefer religiöser Verzückung. Der Heilige, bekleidet mit dem dunklen Habit seines Ordens, ist in einer Haltung der Ekstase dargestellt, den Blick nach oben gerichtet und die Hände bittend vor der Brust gefaltet. Eine helle Aura umstrahlt sein Haupt. Zu seiner Rechten kniet ein jugendlicher, geflügelter Engel, der ihm den Bischofsstab reicht und andächtig zu ihm aufblickt. Im Hintergrund, in einer schattigen Nische, erscheint die Figur eines Mönchs, der eine weitere, kleinere Figur, wohl einen Novizen oder ein Kind, segnet. Die Szenerie ist in ein atmosphärisches Chiaroscuro getaucht, das die dramatische Lichtführung der Gegenreformation widerspiegelt. Die dichte Komposition und die monumentale Wirkung der Figuren weisen auf einen italienischen Meister des Barock hin, möglicherweise aus dem Umkreis der Bologneser Schule oder Neapels. Altersspuren, Firnis gebräunt, Craquelé, partiell retuschiert und doubliert. Der Rahmen mit kleineren Bestossungen. | ITALIAN MASTER – The Ecstasy of Saint Benedict 17th or 18th century. Oil on canvas. 92 × 53 cm. Housed in a gilt Baroque-style frame. Overall dimensions: 109 × 71 cm. This large-format painting depicts Saint Benedict of Nursia in a state of profound religious ecstasy. Clad in the dark habit of his order, the saint is shown in an attitude of spiritual rapture, his gaze lifted heavenward and his hands clasped in prayer before his chest. A radiant halo surrounds his head. To his right kneels a youthful winged angel, offering him a bishop's crosier while gazing at him with devotion. In the background, within a shadowed niche, appears the figure of a monk blessing another smaller figure, likely a novice or a child. The scene is immersed in a dramatic chiaroscuro, reflecting the theatrical lighting characteristic of the Counter-Reformation. The dense composition and the monumental treatment of the figures suggest the work of an Italian Baroque master, possibly associated with the Bolognese School or the Neapolitan School. Condition: Showing signs of age; varnish has yellowed, with craquelure throughout. Partially retouched and lined (doubled) canvas. The frame has minor bumps and losses. .
