Todas las subastas / Varios / Italian school (XVIII) - Ecce Homo - Cristo Deriso
Epoch: Late 18th Century (ca. 1780-1790) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions with frame: 62 cm (Height) x 53 cm (Width) Dimensions without frame: 50 cm (Height) x 40 cm (Width) Subject: Ecce Homo (Christ mocked) Description of the Work Of intense drama and deep spirituality, this painting depicts the iconographic subject of Ecce Homo, the moment when Christ, after the scourging and crowning with thorns, is shown to the crowd by Pontius Pilate. The work, stylistically assignable to the late 18th century (Veneto-Lombardine sphere, ca. 1780-1790), reinterpret the Baroque pictorial tradition with notable mastery, blending devotional elements with a moving realism. At the center of the composition dominates the bust of Christ, portrayed in the foreground in a tight frame that emphasizes its pathos. The face, marked by suffering and resignation, is surrounded by a thick crown of thorns whose branches are rendered with material precision. The gaze, cast downward and to the right, is laden with a plaintive humanity, free of rhetoric. Parted lips and eyes reddened by tears contribute to a mood of moving lyricism. Pathos and Color: The painting technique is fluid and rich in nuances. The painter shows excellent command of light, which, grazing and dramatic, models the volumes of the face, highlighting the marks of passion: the wounds on the forehead, the blood trickling among the hair, the expression of pain. The contrast between the cadaverous pallor of the flesh and the intense red of the garment is clear and effective, loading the scene with further emotional tension. The hands, bound by a rope that tightens the wrists, come together in a gesture of submission and prayer, accentuating the penitential character of the work. Atmosphere: The background is dark, almost monochromatic, a theatrical flat that eliminates space and concentrates attention exclusively on Christ’s figure. This compositional choice, clearly caravaggesque in origin, amplifies the sense of solitude and isolation of the Redeemer before his fate. The work is not only a sacred representation but a psychological investigation into innocent suffering, capable of engaging the viewer intimately. Condition and Technical Details Painting Surface: The painting has benefited from a conservative restoration intervention (probably in the 20th century), which restored brightness to the colors and stability to the painted film. The original canvas bears, on the back, signs of time attesting to its authenticity, such as an ancient inventory tag partially legible (visible in the photo). The wooden frame is contemporary with or slightly post-dates the work. The slight diffuse craquelure, natural and non-invasive, is indicative of the genuineness of the seventeenth- or eighteenth-century painting. Frame: The work is set in a splendid and important gilded wooden frame, richly carved with volute, foliage, and Rococo tastes. The frame, in generally good condition, has been perfectly adapted to the painting, giving it an aura of preciousness and importance. It constitutes a valuable decorative element that dignifies the work, making it a unique collectible piece. Provenance: Private collection. Conditions: Excellent conservative conditions, the painting has been professionally restored and is ready for display. The painted surface is stable, colors are vivid, and the support is in good condition. The frame, while showing normal signs of use related to its age, is solid and decorative. Please carefully view the gallery of photographs, an integral part of the description, to appreciate details, execution quality, and the magnificent antique patina. Shipping: The work will be packaged with the utmost professional care, using shock-absorbing materials and a custom-made reinforced wooden crate to ensure its absolute integrity during transport. The shipment will be trackable and insured for the full value of the item. Given the delicacy and weight of the gilded frame, maximum care is recommended during unpacking.
