Southern German School, first half of the 19th century Portrait of a gentleman at the writing desk, circa 1820–1840 Oil on panel. Half-length portrait of a gentleman seated at the writing desk, depicted in dark attire with a wide collar and high white neckcloth. On the foreground plane are arranged several handwritten sheets, a pen and the inkwell, attributes that suggest the identity of the sitter as a professional, official, or man of letters. The work presents the characteristics typical of bourgeois portraiture in the Germanic area of the early 19th century, closely associated with Biedermeier culture: neutral background, sober and restrained composition, analytical rendering of the features and particular attention to the subject’s individuality and social position. Notable is the facial characterization, built through soft chiaroscuro transitions and delicate variations of the complexion. Within a gilded wooden frame decorated in relief with floral motifs, of early nineteenth-century taste. On the verso, a facing panel inserted into the frame structure; there are old protection elements and later metal fastening systems. Numbered label applied to the frame.
