19th-century Italian school “ Portrait of a Young Woman with Flowers ” - Measurements: 112 x 83 cm in a contemporaneous frame Canvas: 98 x 68 cm - oil on canvas - period: 1800–1840 It is a nearly full-length female portrait set among classical ruins in a Roman-inspired taste. The young woman wears a red dress with golden trim and holds a small bouquet of roses tied with a blue ribbon. On her head she carries several books, an unusual iconographic element that could allude to study, wisdom, or an allegorical virtue. Possible dating At first glance the work seems to date from the mid to late 19th century (roughly 1840–1880), within the realm of Italian or European academic painting. It could represent: * an allegorical figure; * a personification of Poetry, Literature, or Education; * a subject inspired by Romantic and Neoclassical traditions.
