Italiaanse school XVII-XVIII

A religious scholar/clergyman, dressed in a black-and-white robe. He sits at a table with a large opened book and makes an educational gesture with his index finger. The dark background, the red cloth, and the handling of light and shadow evoke 17th–18th-century European religious painting. Vermoedelijk Toegeschreven of navolger van: It resembles a portrayal of a Dominican scholar, which makes Saint Thomas Aquinas a possibility. In art, Saint Thomas Aquinas is indeed often depicted in the black-and-white Dominican habit, with a book and an elevated finger. Vermoedelijk Toegeschreven of navolger van: There are several old paintings depicting Thomas Aquinas in a study. The Wellcome Collection, for example, owns a painting in which Thomas sits at the writing desk; this work was once attributed to Andrea Sacchi, possibly Italian, from the 17th or 18th century, described. Oil painting on canvas, in a nice frame The canvas is in reasonably good condition Not signed Dimensions of the canvas: width 110 cm x height 140 cm Likely certainly that it is an image of Saint Thomas Aquinas Black-and-white Dominican habit, tonsure, seated at the writing desk, large opened book, dark study, red upholstery and tablecloth, books, writing materials, raised index finger, as if he is teaching. The painting is offered and shipped without a frame. The reason I offer it without a frame is that it cannot be shipped with UPS if it has a frame. If you still want that frame, it can be taken along for free if you come to pick up the painting. If someone from another country becomes the new owner of the painting and wants the original frame and handles transport via a courier service themselves and pays only for that frame, that is no problem and I will ship it well wrapped. The frame is in perfect condition and complements the painting nicely The frame dimensions are width 120 cm x height 150 cm The painting itself can also be picked up at my home or insured shipped with a track-and-trace code
