Ionia, Magnesia ad Maeandrum Æ Ca. 350-200 BC (No reserve price)

Ionia, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Ca. 350-200 BC. Æ (Bronze, 14 mm, 2.94 g). Obv: Galloping warrior on horseback right, attacking with spear. Rev: Humped bull butting left; MAΓN above, magistrate name below; all within maeander border. Reference: SNG Copenhagen 826-40 var. (magistrate). Magnesia ad Maeandrum occupied a strategic position between Ephesos, Priene and Tralleis, linking the Ionian coast with the Maeander valley. Around 400 BC, its inhabitants relocated to a more defensible site beneath Mount Thorax, near the sanctuary of Artemis Leukophryene. Amid struggles between Sparta and Persia, the city maintained its Greek civic traditions and the local goddess’s cult, which remained central to Magnesian identity.
