Important American Gothic Revival Carved Oak Hall Stand, mid-19th

Important American Gothic Revival Carved Oak Hall Stand mid-19th century, attributed to the "Stanton Hall Master", probably New Orleans, blind-tracery stiles with crocketed finials, pierced carved tracery, quatrefoil, with center mirror, turned holders, marble top, cast iron shell basins, turned feet. Provenance: Private Collection, Natchez, Mississippi. Note: Neal Auction's landmark onsite sale of The Sisters of Mercy Convent Collection, held in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on August 30, 1986, featured the largest assemblage of furniture attributed to the New Orleans "Stanton Hall Master" ever offered at auction. Originally donated to the convent by Jared Reese of Hard Times Plantation, the remarkable group of Gothic Revival furniture comprised four chairs, two sofas, and a hall stand. Among the surviving works attributed to the Stanton Hall Master, this Gothic Revival Hall Stand is exceptionally rare, with only a handful of examples known. These include examples associated with Stanton Hall, Natchez, Mississippi; Hard Times Plantation, Vicksburg, Mississippi, sold to Deanna Vondrak in 1986; the Barnum Collection at Arlington, Natchez, Mississippi; and the present example offered by Neal Auction. Furniture attributed to the Stanton Hall Master is represented in distinguished institutional collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Bybee Collection at the Dallas Museum of Art; and the Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Relatively few examples remain in private hands. Among these are works in the collection of celebrated artist Hunt Slonem, illustrated in Pleasure Palaces: The Art & Homes of Hunt Slonem, page 153, in the interior of Cordt's Mansion. The present hall stand represents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of New Orleans Gothic Revival furniture, distinguished by its scarcity, historical associations, and connection to one of the most celebrated cabinetmaking traditions of the American South.
