Ikebana vase - Bronze - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Elegant and authentic traditional Usubata-type vase (薄端) in bronze with a brown patina from the late Meiji era (circa 1900). This vessel, characterized by its wide flared upper plateau and flat, was specifically designed for Japanese flower art (Ikebana). The bulbous central body houses a finely chased bas-relief cartouche, depicting a mythical dragon emerging from tumultuous waves. It is flanked by two imposing stylized side handles shaped as clouds and foaming seas. The neck and circular pedestal are delicately adorned with fine incised motifs of traditional clouds. The bronze base features its original weighted bottom, ensuring perfect stability of the whole (historically designed to counterbalance the weight of floral arrangements). A very beautiful collectible piece, representative of the craftsmanship of Japanese bronzers at the turn of the 20th century.
