Welcome to my Top Swiss Chronographs Boutique! Hublot is a Swiss luxury watchmaker founded in 1980 by Italian Carlo Crocco. The company operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the French luxury conglomerate LVMH. A scion of the Italian Binda Group dynasty (best known for making Breil watches), Carlo Crocco left the company in 1976, to start a watch company. Moving to Switzerland he formed MDM Geneve and set about designing a watch that he named the Hublot after the French word for "porthole". The watch that he created featured the first natural rubber strap in the history of watchmaking. It took three years of research to create the strap. Despite failing to attract a single potential customer on the first day of its debut at the 1980, Basel Watch Fair, the watch quickly proved to be a commercial success with sales in excess of $US2 million in its first year. Crocco, preoccupied by his own design work and many activities for the Hand-in-Hand Foundation, a charity helping deprived children all around the world, set out to look for someone to who oversee Hublot. In late 2003, Jean-Claude Biver, then president of Swatch Group's Omega division, met Crocco, and in May 2004, Biver assumed duties as CEO, becoming a board member and minority shareholder in Hublot Watches. Shortly after watch visionary Jean-Claude Biver invested in Hublot and became CEO, he pushed to create a bold statement for the brand. In April 2004, the first Big Bang was released. Inspired by the successful Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, the Swiss Designer Yvan Arpa developed the appearance of the watch. It combines exotic materials in contrasting colors in an oversized watch. Biver called it “Art of Fusion” and it was wildly successful with buyers. Hublot combined various materials Kevlar, carbon, ceramic, magnesium, tungsten, stainless steel, gold and, as with the original Hublot models, rubber. A striking feature of the design, as in the first Hublot models designed by Carlo Crocco, is the band. A layer of Kevlar in the watch case gives the impression that the bracelet runs smoothly through it. At the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève 2005 the “Big Bang” won the award for “Best Design” and has become an outstanding sales success. Every Big Bang model is technically a limited edition, and the company has continued to creatively source materials, including red ceramic and “Magic Gold”. The company has also created creative watch movements shown through skeleton dials. The Hublot Big Bang Evolution combines a boldly sculpted 44 mm stainless-steel case with a black ceramic bezel and a richly textured carbon-fibre dial. Polished and brushed surfaces, exposed H-shaped bezel screws and luminous applied indices give this chronograph its unmistakable character. Through the sapphire caseback, the automatic Hublot HUB4100 movement can be admired. It provides an approximately 42-hour power reserve and powers a chronograph with 30-minute and 12-hour counters, together with small seconds and a discreet date display.
