Hubert Goldet Collection (Paris

This voluminous masterwork is the official, richly illustrated auction catalog of Hubert Goldet’s renowned collection of African art. The historic auction took place from June 30 to July 1, 2001 at the Maison de la Chimie in Paris, conducted by auctioneer François de Ricqlès with expertise from top specialists Alain de Monbrison and Pierre Amrouche. With 391 to 393 pages and 643 extensively annotated lots (including iconic masks, figures, and ritual objects), this book stands as one of the most important bibliographic cornerstones in Arts Primitifs. What makes this particular copy unique is the presence of a loose results list (liste des prix adjugés). This gives the serious collector or art historian direct and incontrovertible insight into the hammer prices of these record-breaking auctions. Condition report: Absolute Mint condition / Deadstock Condition of the interior: This book is in an unparalleled unread state. It retains the authentic smell of the printer’s shop and the pages cling together lightly at the fore-edge due to lack of use. Binding and spine: To avoid stressing the fragile binding and spine, the reference photos were taken only at an angle smaller than 100°. For this type of heavy book with a tight, square binding, fully laying it open flat would immediately cause a permanent crease or break in the spine; this copy is completely free from such signs and the spine remains fully intact. Dust jacket: The charcoal-black cover is made with a specific, highly scratch-sensitive matte coating known for taking immediate signs of use. This copy shows only minimalist, unavoidable handling traces from storage and is exceptionally well preserved. The Hubert Goldet Collection is not a solitary entity but forms an inseparable trio with the most authoritative publications and reference works in the tribal art market. The objects in this catalog show direct cross-references and are indispensable alongside: The Barbier-Mueller Collection (Concepts of Beauty in African Art / Arts d'Afrique Noire) – For comparative stylistic analyses of West and Central African masks. Exhibition catalog 'Corps sculptés, corps parés, corps masqués' (Grand Palais, Paris, 1989) – In which pinnacle pieces from the Goldet collection (such as the iconic Dan mask, ex-collection Jack Cardiff) are scientifically cataloged. Sotheby’s & Christie’s Paris (Pre- and Post-2001 archives) – Many pieces from the Goldet auction later formed the basis for the absolute top-segment auctions in Paris and New York. A unique opportunity for building or expanding a specialized art-historical library. Shipping is available with Track & Trace. When purchasing multiple lots, I apply a fair adjustment to the shipping costs, appropriate to the total volume and insured value. Pickup is possible in The Hague, Benoordehout (2596GN).
