Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) is a French writer. Novelist, art critic, playwright, literary critic, essayist, journalist and printer, he left one of the most imposing bodies of novels in French literature, with more than ninety novels and short stories published between 1829 and 1855, gathered under the title La Comédie humaine. In addition, there are The Seven Dramas, as well as youthful novels published under pseudonyms and about twenty-five penciled works. Honoré de Balzac is a master of the French novel, having tackled several genres, from the philosophical novel with Le Chef-d’œuvre inconnu to the fantastic novel with La Peau de chagrin, and even the poetic novel with Le Lys dans la vallée. He especially excelled in the vein of realism, with notably Le Père Goriot and Eugénie Grandet. As he explains in his preface to La Comédie humaine, his project is to identify the “social species” of his era, just as Buffon identified zoological species. Having discovered through his readings of Walter Scott that the novel could aspire to a “philosophical value,” he seeks to explore the different social classes and the individuals who compose them in order to “write the history forgotten by so many historians, that of manners” and to “compete with civil status.” The author describes the rise of capitalism, the growth of the bourgeoisie in opposition to the nobility, in a complex relationship of contempt and common interests. Interested in beings who have a destiny, he creates characters larger than life: “Everyone at Balzac, even the porters, has genius” (Baudelaire). His political opinions are ambiguous: while he proclaims legitimist convictions during the July Monarchy, he had previously declared himself liberal. He defends workers in 1840 and in 1848, although they are depicted in only one of his novels, L’Interdiction. While professing conservative ideas, he produced a work admired by Marx and Engels, and which in some respects invites anarchism and revolt. Balzac is highly praised by the counter-revolutionary Léon Daudet, who sees Balzac as one of the rare geniuses of 19th-century French literature, an author preserved from the influence of Romanticism.
