Attributed to Hester Adriana C. Zaalberg (1836–1909) Title: Winter Landscape & Ice Scene Medium and support: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 56.5 × 68.5 cm Frame: Gilded Baroque frame; outer measurements 90 × 102 cm Signature: Hand-painted signature lower right Style: Romanticism The painting depicts an ice-covered waterway between snow-covered banks with buildings and bare trees. On the left is a brick house with a red tiled roof, partly covered in snow. At the entrance there are a few figures. Along the shore lies a wooden boat with a standing mast. On the ice skaters move, with a dark-clothed figure with a long stick in the foreground. To the right stand a horse and several people by a laden sleigh. Further back are smaller figures, mills and scattered buildings. The sky occupies most of the pictorial space. Light clouds and blue areas merge on the right into a dark mass of clouds. A few birds are rendered as small silhouettes. The signature is located lower right in the dark ice field. Technique and material analysis The canvas is stretched on a wooden stretcher with a vertical central seam. The sky is built up from broad, overlapping brushstrokes. Architecture, tree branches and figures are developed with smaller, delineated strokes. In the masonry and snow accents there is local impasto. Light, broken brushstrokes over the dark underpainting convey the texture of the ice. Composition and formal analysis The low horizon emphasizes the sky. The buildings on the left counter the open ice field on the right. The curved shoreline and the figures diminishing in size toward the back guide the eye to the middle distance. Masts, logs and mills provide vertical accents. The color scheme blends cool blues and grays with red-brown and ochre tones in the buildings, vegetation and clothing. The light snow band in the distance contrasts with both the dark foreground and the cloud mass above. Small warm color accents mark individual figures. Stylistic and art-historical context The combination of a winter landscape with figure accretions, detailed buildings and pronounced light contrasts aligns with the Romantic landscape tradition. The spatial structure and variation between dark and light zones support this stylistic placement. The work is attributed to Hester Adriana C. Zaalberg. Comparable artists Andreas Schelfhout, Nicolaas Roosenboom, Louis Apol, Andreas Achenbach, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer Condition Retouchings are present in the painting.
