Hermann - Teddy bear Hermann - 1920-1930 - Germany

Antique German mohair teddy bear about 48 cm, dating from around 1928–1935, with a working tilt-brom mechanism – possibly Max Hermann Characterful old German teddy bear of about 47–48 cm, presumably manufactured around the late 1920s/early 1930s. The bear is made of mohair, firmly stuffed with wood wool and five-way jointed. It has old glass eyes with amber-colored rims and large black pupils. What is particularly notable is the clearly separately set, short-pile snout. This type of construction is known, among others, from early bears by Max Hermann/MAHESO of Sonneberg. Rudolf Haas has also emerged as a possible manufacturer in comparative research. Because the bear has no maker’s mark, label or button, the manufacturer cannot be established with certainty. The bear features a still-working tilt-brom mechanism. When tilted, it gives one deep roar. The soft fabric paw soles appear old/original. There are no obvious claw marks visible. The bear has a center seam along the back and a V-shaped seam construction at the nape of the neck. CONDITION Clearly played-with and damaged antique condition. There is localized heavy wear and hair loss on the mohair. There are also damaged/open spots and wear to the legs and paw coverings. The original nose and mouth embroidery is not fully present; there are loose and missing stitches. As far as known, the bear has not been restored. The glass eyes are present and the wood-wool filling still feels firm. The brommer (mechanism) still works. The photos are an explicit part of the condition description. DATING / DESCRIPTION Germany, probably Sonneberg/Thuringia, circa 1928–1935. Possibly Max Hermann/MAHESO; Rudolf Haas cannot be completely ruled out. The attribution is not proven due to the absence of a factory mark.
