Henri Matisse, born December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau, Picardy, France, and died November 3, 1954 in Nice, is often regarded as the leading French painter of the 20th century. He was the leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900 and throughout his career aimed for the expressivity of color. His subjects were mainly domestic or figurative, and a clear Mediterranean flair is present in the treatment. Matisse's style is characterized by the use of color and form typical of Fauvism. He used bright colors to depict his subjects, with more emphasis on form and feeling than on a concrete form. The eight main art styles associated with Matisse are Fauvism, Divisionism, Pointillism, Post-Impressionism, Orientalism, Cubism, Abstract Art, and Modernism. Matisse's works have changed hands at auction multiple times, achieving realized prices up to 80,750,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. His painting "Odalisque couchée aux magnolias" (1923) achieved a record price for the artist when it sold in 2018 at a well-known auction house for 80.8 million dollars. One of Matisse's notable works is 'Petit Intérieur Bleu' (1947), which illustrates his mastery in creating vibrant, dynamic compositions. The painting shows a richly colored interior, with expressive brushstrokes and a harmonious mix of blue, green, and yellow. The piece captures Matisse's ability to transform everyday environments into lively, almost abstract compositions, and demonstrates his deep understanding of color and its emotional impact. 'Petit Intérieur Bleu' is evidence of Matisse's lasting influence on modern art, and reflects his ability to innovate and inspire through his unique vision.
