Never framed, never exposed. - Size of each: 70 x 100cm. - Henri Matisse’s Nu Bleu I and Nu Bleu II (1952) belong to the celebrated Blue Nudes series, one of the defining achievements of the artist’s final years and a radical synthesis of drawing, colour and sculpture through his papiers découpés, or cut-paper technique. Created when physical limitations increasingly prevented Matisse from painting at an easel, these compositions emerged from sheets of paper painted in intense blue gouache, which he cut directly with scissors and arranged into simplified female figures. In both works, the body is transformed into an interlocking rhythm of curves, limbs and negative white spaces, reducing the seated nude to its essential silhouette while retaining a remarkable sense of volume and movement. The concentrated ultramarine blue recalls the Mediterranean light and colour that fascinated Matisse throughout his career, while the sculptural poses reflect his longstanding exploration of the female figure and his interest in African and non-Western art. Their extraordinary economy of form places the Blue Nudes at a crucial point between Fauvism, modernist abstraction and the increasingly direct visual language that would influence generations of artists, from Ellsworth Kelly and Alexander Calder to later Pop and contemporary art. With their combination of brilliant blue and luminous white, Nu Bleu I and Nu Bleu II have exceptional decorative impact when displayed as a coordinated pair.
