Fascinating illustrated edition of 12 beautiful engravings of this religious narrative devoted to the Marian apparitions at Lourdes and to the birth of the great pilgrimage that develops around the Massabielle grotto - The work traces the events that begin in February 1858, when Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl from Lourdes, claims to have repeatedly seen a mysterious “Lady” in the grotto, and gradually follows the stages of these apparitions up to their recognition in Catholic teaching - Bernadette's testimony occupies a central place; her modest family background, her simplicity, her piety and the difficulties she encounters in facing questions from civil and religious authorities and from those around her allow Lasserre to present her story as that of a young girl confronted by an event that surpasses her - Henri Lasserre - Notre-Dame De Lourdes - 1870 - Victor Palmé - Approximately 500 Pages. Good binding condition, the work in its original red demi-chagrin binding, red percaline boards, stains and wear from handling, a few minor defects on the cover, heads and corners worn, gilded edges, spine with finely decorative raised bands, titling and author’s name gilded, borders stamped in relief on the boards - Good interior condition, scattered stains and foxing, work enriched with 12 beautiful hors-texte engravings, endpapers in fair condition, a pleasing copy - Delivery service available within a few days –
