Artist: Hendrick Hulk (1842–1937) Title: Hollands strandgezicht Technique and support: pencil on paper Dimensions: 15 × 23.5 cm; with frame 33 × 45 cm Signature: lower right, H. Hulk Style: Hague School Provenance: Dutch art collection Hendrick Hulk was born in 1842 in Amsterdam and died in 1937 in Haarlem. He learned the craft from his father Abraham Hulk and worked as a marine and landscape painter. His work includes seaside views and depictions of shipping, with an impressionist approach that aligns with the Hague School. Object description The drawing shows a beach with vessels, figures, and facilities for beachgoers. To the left of center is a sailing vessel with a tall mast and rigging, with a smaller boat in front of it. Further left there is a second vessel. A figure at the waterline appears beside a line leading to the larger ship. Middle right is a bathing cart with large wheels, with a figure beside it. On the right are several figures and a row of covered beach chairs indicated. Summarized contours suggest buildings in the distance. Wavy lines and dark bands articulate the foreground; above the horizon light cloud formations have been added. The scene is executed in gray tonalities. Bottom right bears the signature H. Hulk. Technique and material analysis The pencil is applied to paper with a visible fine surface texture. Narrow, emphatic lines describe masts, rigging, and contours, while broader, granular areas model the hulls, the beach, and the clouds. Variations in line pressure and density give the scene tonal contrasts. In the sky, large areas of the paper remain largely untouched. The sheet is mounted in a light matte within a gold-colored ornamental frame. Composition and formal analysis The composition is predominantly horizontal, with the vessels and beach motifs grouped around the horizon. The tall mast to the left of center forms the main vertical accent. The bathing cart and beach chairs extend the arrangement to the right. Slanting and wavy lines in the foreground lead to this central group. Overlaps, scale differences, and diminishing contrasts reinforce the sense of space. The darkest accents lie at the central vessel and some figures; the sky is lighter and more open. Stylistic and art historical context The coastal motif, the concise figure depiction, and the emphasis on tonal coherence align with the Hague School. The alternation between precise contours and loosely indicated atmospheric areas gives the drawing a sketch-like character. The formal characteristics do not provide grounds for precise dating. Comparable artists Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Jacob Maris, Bernard Blommers, Eugène Boudin, Max Liebermann Condition The paper shows scattered small brownish spots and localized light discolorations. A diagonal crease is visible in the top left. The frame shows wear on the gold finish, cracks in the ornaments, and some missing parts. Old damage has been partly touched up; along the bottom edge and in the corners losses and restoration spots remain visible. Conclusion Hollands strandgezicht is a signed pencil drawing by Hendrick Hulk that, in subject and tonal treatment, aligns with the Hague School. A more precise dating has not been established. The work is framed and comes from a Dutch art collection. The sheet shows localized discoloration and a crease line; the frame bears wear, loss of ornaments, and older restoration traces.
