HEADREST Attributed to the artist Mutuaga. Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region, Milne Bay province, village of Dagodagoisu (?) Probably carved between 1900 and 1919 Wood and lime with signs of wear and a dry patina H. 12.5 cm – W. 46.5 cm – D. 7 cm Inscription on the top bar: “Native Pillow” and label on the underside: “Guy.” Provenance: - Emil Storrer Collection, Zurich, circa 1960 - Passed down to Michael Storrer, Hallau, Switzerland - Meyer Gallery, Paris - Harry Beran Collection A rare headrest supported by two stylized birds with elongated beaks. The birds’ bodies are beautifully decorated with incised spirals. Harry Beran included this headrest in the body of work by the great sculptor Massim, the famous Mutuaga (1860–1920), as being “most likely” of his own hand.
