This original leaf is an incunabulum from 1493, originating from the Liber Chronicarum, printed in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger with the famous graphic design by Hartmann Schedel and the woodcuts from Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff’s workshop. The front of the page, officially numbered as sheet CCXXXVI, opens with the historical chronicle of the reign of Ruprecht of the Palatinate, King of the Romans and holder of the imperial crown at the beginning of the fifteenth century, recounting his descent into Italy, the conflict with the Visconti at Brescia, and the complex diplomatic relations with the city of Florence, ending with his death and burial in Heidelberg. Just below, the text and a suggestive woodcut showing an assembly of cardinals and theologians introduce the events of the Council of Pisa (Concilium pisanum) of 1409, convened to attempt to heal the Western Schism, in which the Church was divided among several popes. The back of the page shifts from political chronology to a gallery of illustrious religious figures, intellectuals, and humanists of the time, enriched by four accurately placed woodcut portraits within the text. Among them stands out the extensive biography of the famous Dominican preacher St. Vincent Ferrer (S. Vincentius ordinis predicatorum), followed by the memoirs of great jurists such as Baldo degli Ubaldi (Baldus iuris doctor), of esteemed physicians and philosophers such as Niccolò Falcucci, and finally of eminent scholars who marked the Italian and European Renaissance, including the grammarian Taddeo da Ravenna and the Byzantine humanist Emanuele Crisolora (Crisoloras Constantinopolitanus), essential for the rediscovery and diffusion of the study of the Greek language in Italy.
