Guy Le Querrec (1941-) - Magnum Photos

Born in Paris in 1941 into a modest Breton family, Guy Le Querrec received his first camera, an Ultra Fex, as a Christmas gift in 1953. He took his first photographs of jazz musicians in London in 1962 and debuted professionally in 1967. The weekly magazine Jeune Afrique published one of his photographs of the May 1968 events, as well as his early reports on the Paris Jazz Festival and Morocco, and hired him as graphic editor and photographer; he carried out several reports in the Maghreb and Francophone Africa. Le Querrec joined Magnum Photos in 1976, becoming a full member the following year. His jazz training has influenced his photography. He sees everyday scenes as a musical score, performed or activated by natural forces. Sunbeams in a cafe could be a shout or a trumpet cue; Spanish workers resting at the edge of a limestone quarry are musical notes in a piece for solo piano.
