Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) - "The Virgin

Gustav Klimt (after), "The Virgin (Die Jungfrau), 1913". Signed on the plate. Condition: the work is in excellent condition. Authorized color offset lithograph. Format: 40 x 40 cm. Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a leading Austrian painter of the Vienna Secession and one of the most innovative figures in modern art. His work is praised for its fusion of symbolism, eroticism, and decorative opulence. Klimt developed a unique visual language that combined natural figures with flat, ornamental surfaces, often enriched with gold leaf and intricate geometric patterns. His art explored themes of love, sensuality, death, and renewal, making him a central figure in early 20th-century modernism. In the art market, Klimt’s works are among the most sought after worldwide. Paintings such as Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I have fetched more than $100 million, placing him among the most valuable artists at auctions. Collectors and museums highly prize Klimt for the rarity of his masterworks, the iconic appeal of his golden period, and the emotional intensity present in his later works. A remarkable example of Klimt’s mature style is The Virgin (1913), also known as Die Jungfrau. The piece presents a swirling composition of interwoven female figures, immersed in vibrant colors and rich decorative motifs. The women, arranged in a circular embrace, symbolize innocence, sensuality, and the transformative stages of womanhood. The bold palette of violets, blues, and reds, together with Klimt’s characteristic ornamental spirals and floral motifs, creates a dreamlike, almost cosmic atmosphere. The work stands out as a celebration of femininity and fertility, where erotism is fused with a mystical, transcendental quality. Today, The Virgin represents Klimt’s late period, in which color and pattern took precedence over gold, and it remains a high point in his oeuvre. Its presence in major museum collections underscores both its cultural importance and the enduring market demand for Klimt’s art.
