The techniques used to create jewellery often reveal as much about the period in which it was made as its shape or materials. This elegant bracelet was created in Paris around 1870 and reflects the prestigious taste of those years in a particularly beautiful way. The bracelet itself is made up of rectangular, slightly curved links that are connected to each other by small hinges and wrap smoothly around the wrist. A finely engraved vine ornament runs across the entire surface and connects the individual elements to form a single unit. The centerpiece is an oval showpiece that protrudes like a shield over the actual band. It is made up of several parts and is mounted on the central link with small rivets. A finely profiled frame surrounds a decorative field of black enamel, whose striped design forms the background for three natural pearls in prong settings. Their soft shimmer contrasts attractively with the dark enamel and lends the design a special elegance. The quality of the execution of this piece of jewellery is remarkable. Unlike many comparable works created in Germany at the same time, this piece does not use filled or reinforced gold constructions. Although the high-carat gold is finely and lightly worked, it has enough substance to accommodate the meticulous hand engravings. This precision craftsmanship is characteristic of high-quality French goldsmith work from the second third of the 19th century. The bracelet shines in the spirit of the Second Empire under Napoleon III. Jewelry of those years was meant to be seen, to show presence and to celebrate the beauty of precious materials. This idea can still be seen in the bracelet today. We discovered the French bracelet here in Berlin.
