Goethe - West-oestlicher Divan

Goethe, J.W.v. (und Marianne von Willemer). West-oestlicher Divan. Stuttgart, Cotta, 1819. 556 Seiten Mit gestochenem Frontispiz und Kupfertitel. Roter Pp. d. Zt. mit goldgepr., linearen Deckelfileten mit Eckfleurons (etwas berieben, Rücken stärker bestoßen). WG 123; Hagen 416; Goedeke IV/3, 492 (110); Kippenberg I, 399-401; Graesse III, 105.- Erste Ausgabe, zweiter Druck. Goethe, JWv (and Marianne von Willemer). West-Eastern Divan. Stuttgart, Cotta, 1819. 556 pages. With engraved frontispiece and copperplate title page. Contemporary red paper binding with gilt-stamped linear cover fillets with corner fleurons (somewhat rubbed, spine more heavily bumped). WG 123; Hagen 416; Goedeke IV/3, 492 (110); Kippenberg I, 399-401; Graesse III, 105.- First edition, second printing. Goethe's only collaborative work with a woman. The first poems were written as early as 1814, but the majority in the autumn of 1815, when Goethe was staying at the Willemers' country estate near Frankfurt and a passionate relationship developed with his host's wife, Marianne von Willemer. The authorship of the poet was only revealed in 1869 through a publication by Hermann Grimm. - The frontispiece shows 'Arabic letters surrounded by arabesques (= The Eastern Divan by the Western author)', and, like the title page, was engraved by C. Ermer (Hagen 416). - With the title on page 9 corrected to 'Talismane' and the two pagination errors (pages 399/400 are numbered twice, and the pagination jumps from page 494 to 497). - Some foxing throughout, in places more severe. - Small signature 'Schubart' in an old hand on the front endpaper.
