"Too much of a good thing can be wonderful" is one of Mae West's legendary sayings. With her taboo-breaking wit and glamorous appearance, West embodied the new type of woman of the interwar years: emancipated and fearless. In 1935, she was the highest-earning woman in Hollywood. In some of her films, she wore her own diamond jewellery - because this was much more effective in the black-and-white films of those years than colored stones. This brooch also dates from the heyday of great Hollywood divas such as Mae West and would have stood out in the monochrome of black and white films. The design completely dispenses with the use of color and appears in crystalline white. In its preciousness, the brooch is in no way inferior to the Hollywood jewels of those years. 154 diamonds in cuts typical of the time sparkle with brilliance and fire. They are set in platinum settings so that the light is always reflected in white. Skillfully executed sawing work covers the design with a network of elegant fan motifs so that the brooch does not appear heavy despite its size. Each edge is lined with millegrains so that the light is not reflected by polished precious metal surfaces, but solely by the approx. 5.74 ct diamonds.
