A mountain specialist (both in climbs and descents), he was unlucky that his sporting life coincided with Miguel Induráin's era of splendor. He was a very combative rider who stood out for his constant attacks and for his long escapes in the Grand Tours. He became known to the general public in the 1990 Tour de France, thanks to a big breakaway in the stage ending at Futuroscope along with other riders, where he gained many minutes of advantage; that year he finished second in the Tour, losing the yellow jersey in the final time trial of the race to Greg LeMond.
