Documents annotated by Édouard Bourdelle and Louis Roule, professors at the National Museum of Natural History. First edition of this captivating photographic album devoted to the animal world, with text by Jean Giraudoux. Following a few pages of text, the book consists primarily of a remarkable series of 96 full-page photographs, each accompanied by a zoological caption. The illustrations include photographs by Germaine Krull, Laure Albin-Guillot, Trampus, Paul Unger, and others. The photographic quality is significantly superior to that of a typical popular zoology book: close-ups, very tight framing, studies of textures, animal scenes, and compositions that are at times almost abstract. It is precisely this convergence of Giraudoux, modern 1930s photography, and natural history that makes the volume so compelling today. The book is part of the beautiful “Images du Monde” collection, of which it is the fifth volume. The institutional bibliography lists 13 pages and 96 plates, 26 cm in size. Copy in its original orange cover. Cover is scuffed, with wear on the spine, head, foot, and corners; small creases and signs of wear; a handwritten “1931” on the front cover; and a few old price annotations. The inner spine is very fragile and partially detached, as clearly shown in the photograph, though the quires remain intact. Old label from the Joseph Gibert bookstore. A few foxing spots and marginal discoloration.
