Gioacchino La Pira was among the best known exponents of 19th century Neapolitan gouache painting, a genre that developed to meet the demand of Grand Tour travellers. Active in Naples between 1839 and 1875, he devoted himself almost exclusively to views of the city and its surroundings, executed with a precise technique and a luminous palette that made him one of the most sought after artists of his time. The view opens onto the gulf from a rocky height in the foreground, where a wind-bent tree leads the eye towards the city stretched along the coast, with its domes and the fortified hill behind. Vesuvius rises at the centre with its plume of smoke, while the water is enlivened by sailing boats. On the right, three figures in popular dress complete the scene. The rosy light of the sky and the delicate layers of tempera convey the atmosphere typical of the artist's finest production.
