GILLES (Matthieu), KOWALCZYK (Bożena Anna), & RUTGERS (Jaco). Rembrandt and the Italian Painter-Engravers from Castiglione to Tiepolo. Épinal, Departmental Museum of Ancient and Contemporary Art; Ludion, n.d. Large quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding. Exhibition catalog devoted to the influence of Rembrandt and his engravings on Italian painter-engravers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Texts by Matthieu Gilles, Bożena Anna Kowalczyk, and Jaco Rutgers. The book examines the particularly rapid spread of Rembrandt’s prints in Italy and their reception by Italian artists, from Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Stefano della Bella to Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, including notably Giuseppe Nogari and the Venetian artists. Particular attention is paid to chiaroscuro, depictions of elderly figures, and the ways in which the Dutch master’s engravings were circulated and copied. Extensively illustrated in black and white and in color, featuring reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints. Extensive documentation on the relationship between Dutch and Italian printmaking in the 17th and 18th centuries. ISBN 90-5544-490-1. Very good condition, with slight signs of wear on the cover.
