GIDE (André). Le Voyage d'Urien. Paris, Librairie de l'Art indépendant, 1893. In-4, paperback, illustrated cover, marbled paper slipcase. First edition, illustrated with 30 original symbolist-inspired lithographs by Maurice Denis, printed in warm ochre, brown and almond green cameos, and a woodcut on the cover. This is the first book illustrated by Maurice Denis (1870- 1943), and one of the major Symbolist books. One of 300 copies on laid paper. Fine provenance: the copy bears a signed mailing from André Gide to Georges Rodenbach (1855- 1898), Belgian poet and novelist, author of the great symbolist novel Bruges-la-Morte (1892), and a great friend of Stéphane Mallarmé and his compatriot Émile Verhaeren. Small traces of adhesive on endpapers. (Cailler, n°37-67; Chapon, Le Peintre et le livre, pp. 39-42 and 278; Yves Peyré, Peinture et poésie, p. 106: "This book is the most accentuated trace of Symbolism, the Nabis' ratification of the principle of the dialogue book"; Ray, n°375).
