Germany. Field Service Badge (War Commemorative Medal) 1840 Bronze Size - 31.6mm, Weight - 19.7g. Field Service Badge (War Commemorative Medal) 1840 This medal was instituted on June 14, 1840, the birthday of Grand Duke Ludwig I, father of Ludwig II. All soldiers serving in the Grand Duchy of Hesse who participated in a campaign, whether as combatants or non-combatants, were eligible to receive this field service decoration. It was made from old Hessian cannons. The die cutter was Professor Chr. Schnitzspahn. A total of 30,287 medals were demonstrably awarded. Participants in campaigns from 1780 to 1866 were eligible to receive it. Due to the large number produced and the high demand for duplicates and replacements, official restrikes were manufactured between 1842 and 1867. Differences include the missing period after the 14 in the date of instituted. Source: Jörg Nimmergut, German Orders and Decorations until 1945, Vol. 1
