Gerhard Haverkamp (1872–1926) - Bloemenperk in de Tuin (No Reserve)

Artist: Gerhard Haverkamp (1872–1926) Title: Flower Bed in the Garden Dating: 1926 Technique and support: oil on canvas Dimensions: 37 × 49 cm; with frame 54.5 × 57.5 cm Signature: lower right, painted with the brush, “G.C. Haverkamp ’26” Provenance: Dutch private collection Gerhard Christiaan Haverkamp, also known as Gerrit Haverkamp, was born in 1872 in Amsterdam and died in 1926 in Baarn. He was a painter and graphic artist who produced, among other things, landscapes and architectural representations. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae and settled in Soest in 1919. Object description The painting shows a garden with blooming plants along a light-colored path. A cut brick wall borders the scene on the left. In the foreground are flowers with red, pink, and white petals among long stems and blue-green foliage. Behind the path the vegetation continues. To the right of the center stands a tree, the crown of which partially falls outside the picture plane. Above the plants, a light blue sky with white and pink touches is visible. Figures are absent. The signature and dating are located lower right in the path. Technique and material analysis The oil paint has been applied to canvas in alternating thin and thicker passages. In the path there are broad, predominantly horizontal brushstrokes; the canvas texture remains locally visible. Flowers and leaves are built up from short strokes and curved brushmarks, with some areas of impasto accents. Fine lines distinguish stems and leaf contours. The surface shows differences in gloss, with the relief of the brushstrokes remaining visible. Composition and formal analysis The composition rests on the alternation between densely vegetated areas and the open plane of the path. The wall on the left and the tree to the right of center form vertical accents. Overlaps, differences in motif size, and the path continuing back to the right support spatial depth. Cool blue and blue-green tones dominate the vegetation. Red and pink flowers form scattered color accents against the ocher and rose-brown ground. The repetition of flower heads and upright stems gives the planting an irregular rhythm. Stylistic and art-historical context The loose brushwork, individual color notes, and alternation of light and dark areas align with an impressionistic treatment of the garden motif. These formal features alone do not provide a specific link to the Amsterdam School. The dating of 1926 places the painting in Haverkamp's final years. Comparable artists Jacob Kever, Arnold Marc Gorter, Cornelis Vreedenburgh, Claude Monet, Max Liebermann Condition The painting is in good condition. No retouchings have been detected. Conclusion Flower Bed in the Garden is a signed and 1926-dated garden view in oil on canvas. The work is characterized by a loose, locally impasto paint handling and pronounced color contrasts.
