The watercolor is fresh, the washes intact, the paper sound. Period frame with multiple patinas (silver, gray, traces of ochre and blue) showing rare small losses, mainly at the corners. Light gray velvet-look passe-partout, of great elegance. The protective glass has been removed for safety during transport. The work will be shipped without glass, packaged with professional materials. Description Here is Burgundian winter as only Hosotte knows how to paint it: a large watercolor from 1991, titled on the back Snow Near Vézelay, where the silence of the snow becomes almost audible. An immense sky, washed with pearl gray and pale blue, occupies more than half of the sheet. At the bottom, the village falls asleep under a white mantle: crowded roofs, stone walls barely discernible, a path fading away. A large bare tree, drawn with a nervous and assured stroke, structures the entire composition. Behind, the Morvan hills fade into ultramarine bands. Hosotte lets the white of the paper play the role of snow; a few ochre and reddish-brown washes are enough to bring the frozen grasses and shadows to life. Nothing is overloaded. Everything is expressed with magistral economy. It is a piece of generous format (62 × 49 cm), rare for a watercolor by the artist, executed in the very year he opened his Saint-Pierre gallery in Vézelay. It belongs to this prolific period when Hosotte, settled between Irancy and the eternal hill, tirelessly paints snowy villages, the “paths of men,” and winter light. A work that is both decorative and contemplative, ideal for a contemporary interior as well as a classic living room. Artist biography Georges Hosotte, born June 6, 1936 in Paris, is one of the major figures of contemporary French painting. Self-taught, trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, he settled permanently in Irancy (Yonne) in 1964. There, amid vineyards and cherry trees, he finds his inexhaustible motif: the seasons of Burgundy, the villages of Auxerrois and the Morvan, Vézelay. Painter, watercolorist, and lithographer, Antral Prize 1970, Knight of the Arts and Letters, he has exhibited since the 1960s in Paris (Saint-Placide, Soulanges, Place Beauvau) before opening his own venues: the Irancy studio-gallery in 1979 and the Saint-Pierre Gallery in Vézelay in 1990. His preferred themes — flowering cherry trees, poppies, villages under snow, grand oaks — have earned him international recognition. His works are in numerous private and public collections. With his son Tristan, he continues this tradition within the Hosotte galleries of Irancy and Vézelay. A great winter watercolor, signed, titled, dated, in a frame with a patina that gives it a real presence. A collectible piece, ready to adorn a wall.
