Scientific data Phylum: Mollusca Class: Gastropoda Family: Cypraeidae Genus: Mauritia Troschel, 1863 Species: Mauritia arabica (Linnaeus, 1758) Type: marine shell of Cypraeidae Length: 61 mm Ornamentation: brownish-red reticulate network on an ivory background Surface: highly lustrous and porcelain-like The name Mauritia arabica is currently accepted by the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), which treats Cypraea arabica Linnaeus, 1758 as a synonym. A specimen particularly sought after for its size With its 61 mm, this specimen stands out for an XL body size that is especially impressive. Coupled with its extremely dense pattern, its bulging shape, and its presentation, this dimension gives it a remarkable presence on display. The piece is particularly suited to a specialized Cypraeidae collection, a cabinet of curiosities, or a natural history museum display. The contrast between the ivory surface, the fine brown-reddish ramification, and the peripheral dark macules gives this shell an almost graphic and architectural aesthetics, while its denticulated aperture allows full appreciation of its morphology. A large-sized specimen, with exceptional natural ornamentation, combining scientific interest, aesthetic quality, and strong display presence for a collection.
