Fritz Glarner (July 20, 1899 in Zurich — September 18, 1972 in Locarno) was a Swiss-American painter. Glarner was one of the leading proponents of the so-called Concrete Art, a movement whose roots go back to the painters of De Stijl and to the principles of the Bauhaus. He was a pupil of Piet Mondrian, strongly influenced by Mondrian’s theories on “dynamic symmetry.” As he developed as an artist, his works became increasingly influenced by Mondrian’s neoplastic theory. His leaning toward non-representational art had already begun in 1929 in Paris, where he was part of the Abstraction-Création group. Glarner adopted Mondrian’s motif of organizing colors and simplified shapes into an architectural pattern. He introduced a diagonal into Mondrian’s strict geometric horizontal and vertical aesthetics, creating new, yet equally systematic, principles of composition, which he called “relational painting.” Like Mondrian, Glarner limited his color palette to the primaries: red, yellow, and blue. He expanded Mondrian’s “black line” into a wide range of grays, used both as line and, like the primaries, as geometric color areas. Many of his works are tondos, with their characteristic relational principles arranged within a circle. Glarner’s additions and alterations of structure and color to Mondrian’s style gave vitality and spatial dimensions to his works. Twenty-four of his works belong to the Museo Cantonale d’Arte in Lugano, Switzerland. A mural by Glarner is included in the collection of The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Art Collection in Albany, New York.
