Madonna with Child – Italian School, late 18th century (1780–1790) Oil on canvas mounted on antique wood, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. The composition shows the Madonna seated with the Child in her arms, in keeping with the tradition of Italian devotional painting. The Virgin is depicted with a veiled head and a broad dark mantle, while the Child, nude and with a halo, holds a small flower. The painting is characterized by a warm and sober palette, by a simple devotional construction of the figures, and by a particularly effective rendering of the faces of the Virgin and the Child. Style: Italian Late Baroque / early Neoclassicism. The work preserves a beautiful antique presence and is housed in an important decorative frame, which particularly enhances the vertical format of the painting. The painting was restored in 1986.
