French School (XIX) - Château de Bourg-Archambault

Beautiful oil on canvas dated March 11, 1885, depicting the Château de Bourg-Archambault, in Vienne. The château is easily recognizable by its imposing entrance gatehouse, consisting of two powerful round towers surrounded by moats. The painter offers a close-up view highlighting the medieval architecture and the volumes of the fortified complex. The composition plays on the contrast between the warm tones of the stone and roofs, the blue of the sky, the vegetation and the reflections in the moats. The Château de Bourg-Archambault constitutes a remarkable testament to fortified medieval architecture of the late Middle Ages. Several parts of the building are protected as Historical Monuments. The work is monogrammed “L.V.” and precisely dated “11 March 1885” at the bottom right, thus bearing witness to a monument over 140 years old. The identity of the artist has not been determined.
