FRENCH SCHOOL (LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY) A GROUP OF FOUR RELIGIOUS AND HISTORICAL SCENES, COMPRISING: THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT; THE FAMILY OF DARIUS BEFORE ALEXANDER; AND TWO UNIDENTIFIED SUBJECTS, POSSIBLY DEPICTING SCENES FROM THE LEGEND OF SAINT URSULA Painted silk The first two 27 x 43.5cm (10½ x 17in.); the latter two 25 x 37cm (9¾ x 14½in.) (4) This group of four silk sketches appear to be studies of Baroque tapestry. When comparing these designs to contemporary tapestry panels, the works exhibit striking similarities in their figurative imagery, colour palette, and their distinctive style of masque costume design. The term masque costume refers to a fusion of Baroque or Renaissance fashion with classical dress which creates a rich allegorical image of the ancient world. In particular the two sketches of the Story of Alexander hold close parallels to an early eighteenth-century depiction of ‘The History of Alexander’ series by Charles Le Brun within the Royal Collection (RCIN 1079). While specific composition of individual panels varies, the present lot shares a remarkably similar aesthetic, theatrical flare and narrative treatment.
