French 3rd Infantry Regiment Fanion, Silk Military Flag

Western Europe, France, ca. 1880s to 1920s CE. A French military fanion associated with the 3rd Infantry Regiment. One side bears the designation "3e Rég. d'Infanterie," while the verso is inscribed "1er Bataillon" (1st Battalion). The fanion is constructed of blue silk with applied gold fringe and embroidered flaming grenade motifs, emblematic of French infantry units. The gold thread embroidery is worked over raised cardstock, creating a relief effect for the lettering and symbols.
