He is the founder of experimental biology, and is nicknamed the Father of modern parasitology. Redi is considered one of the greatest biologists of all time. He published a large number of naturalistic studies, which aroused great interest across Europe. In Observations on Snakes he demonstrated that the venom of these animals, contrary to the common opinion of the era, is harmful only if inoculated into a wound and not if ingested. Particularly important are his Experiments on the Generation of Insects of 1668, originated from a letter to Carlo Dati, in which he refuted the then generally accepted theory of spontaneous generation with an in-depth experimental study of the reproduction of flies. In Redi’s scientific work, more than the results obtained, the method used is essential, earning him a place of great prominence in the history of the experimental method. Fine typographic decorations on every frontispiece. Numerous initials finely engraved, head-pieces and tail-pieces. In the first volume 68 plates out of text, some of them folded several times. Internally the copies are very clean, with occasional foxing of little consequence. Complete and usable.
