Frame - Wood

gold-plated wooden frame with a box-moulded profile dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, characterized by a molded box profile and a gilded finish with traces of wear and an underlying orange-red bole. Based on the morphological characteristics of the silhouette and the technical details visible from the wear of the finish, it is attributable to a manufacture from Central Italy, most likely Roman or Tuscan in origin. 1750–1790 (Neoclassical Period). This is an evolution of the famous Salvator Rosa frame (also known as Maratta), enriched with a molded box-profile. The linearity of the smooth channels and the complete absence of floral or complex Baroque engravings indicate the transition to the sober, geometric taste of the late eighteenth century. This smooth silhouette, alternating with grooves and small cords, was the preferred model of Roman and Florentine workshops for framing large landscapes, mythological scenes, or period portraits. The gilding in gold leaf was applied over a wash atop a characteristic preparation of plaster and orange-red bole. The red bole clearly protrudes along the outer edges and on the reliefs where the gold has worn away due to time and cleaning; this type of warm preparation and the tone of the gilding are hallmarks of 18th-century Italian craftsmanship. Potential buyers are invited to closely view the photos to avoid complaints and disputes.
