Fr. 63a. 1863 $5 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. Reflective of a trove of high-grade survivors that somehow managed to avoid redemption. This 1863 $5 Legal Tender Note is certainly a fine testament to the aesthetic standards of the 1860s and offers a composition vaguely similar to the Obsolete notes of the period. Featuring an offset portrait of Alexander Hamilton at right, Hamilton also holds the distinction of being depicted on the $2 and $50 Legal Tender Notes during the 1860s is seen here opposite an engraving of Thomas Crawford's Freedom which currently stands atop the United States Capitol Building in the District of Columbia. The rest of the design is rounded out by no shortage of verbiage and various design elements that were once at the forefront of contemporary production methods. Together with the grade assigned by PMG, it takes little to reason that these elements offer an uncommon glimpse into the past unequalled by the mass of unsightly survivors that are seemingly found with regularity among the offerings of various marketplaces and auction venues. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
