Fr. 334. 1891 $50 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.

A Monumental $50 Silver Certificate Issued under the Series of 1891 Among the Finest at PMG Fr. 334. 1891 $50 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. Representative of a significant sum of money for the period that was backed with massive stocks of Morgan-design silver dollars stored at various Treasury facilities throughout the United States. This $50 Silver Certificate stands among the company of a small handful of survivors recorded by Track & Price and enumerated at this grade level by PMG in the PMG Population Report. One might wager a guess as to how this piece managed to survive at this grade level, but they will no doubt be taken asunder by the grade assigned. Bestowed a grade of Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ, it takes little to reason that one would be foolish to overlook the abundance of remarkable qualities endemic to this note that was one of just 225,000 produced by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing between 1906 and 1909 on account of the Vernon - Treat signature combination. From the clarity and lifelike detail of Senator Edward Everett's portrait at right to the sublime crimson-red hue endemic to the Treasury seal, this example is a first-rate expression of aesthetics complemented by a like measure of technical quality exemplified by a vivid plate impression and remarkable registration that speaks to a level of impossible eye appeal that cannot be overlooked. The balance of the design offers a similar level of clarity and detail that allows this note to also stand as a monument to a rare level of eye appeal. Individual denomination counters provide testament to the rich complexities of geometric lathework while sublime colors on the back showcase varying albeit attractive shades of green that serve to distinguish the Series of 1891 against previous iterations of this type and denomination where the so-called "Black Backs" offered a sight dominated by large block letters that proudly proclaimed "SILVER" which undoubtedly pleased the populist "Silverites" and political officeholders in states like Nevada. Yet even if one were to discount the historical context and the design, that lack of information fails to take away from the fact that this note stands among the finest of the 48 known survivors enumerated by Track & Price and proudly wears that distinction upon its proverbial brow with much zeal and candor and can only be taken home through a premium bid. Noted for "Exceptional Paper Quality & Great Embossing" by PMG. PMG Pop 3/1 Finer. William T. Vernon (1871 - 1944) Born to former slaves in Missouri, William T. Vernon led a distinguished career in both academic and religious fields. Come 1906 Vernon accepted an appointment from President Theodore Roosevelt and assumed the position of Register of Treasury and served in that role until 1911 when he was then succeeded by James C. Napier of Nashville. Following his service at the Treasury, Vernon was appointed President of Campbell College and briefly served in that role before once again returning to religious work where he would be consecrated as a Bishop in 1920 before undergoing several years of missionary work in South Africa before returning again to Western University in the 1930s. Vernon would eventually die at the age of 73 in 1944 and was buried in Kansas City at Woodlawn Cemetery alongside his wife who joined him in death two days after his death.
